Task Scam (Fake Online Job) — Stolen Funds Recovered

Online Fraud & Fund Recovery · 2025-03-13

Our client was targeted by a 'task scam' — a form of fraud in which victims are recruited for a fake remote job that requires progressive deposits to 'unlock' earnings. We identified the operators, traced the stolen funds, and secured recovery through immediate legal action.

How task scams work

Task scams, also known as 'brushing scams' or 'fake gig economy fraud', recruit victims through social media or messaging apps with offers of easy remote income. Victims are asked to complete simple 'tasks' — rating products, liking posts, performing fake reviews — and initially receive small payments. Gradually they are invited to invest money to access higher-tier tasks with greater returns. The deposits escalate until the victim is bankrupted or becomes suspicious, at which point all contact ceases.

We filed a criminal complaint and provided the prosecuting authority with a complete record of the fraud: all communications, transfer instructions, wallet addresses, and platform access credentials. The digital footprint left by the fraudsters was sufficient to enable identification through cooperation with the relevant service providers. Precautionary measures were obtained targeting the accounts where our client's funds remained.

Task scams are designed to seem harmless and even profitable at first. That is their power. By the time the victim realises what has happened, they have been psychologically conditioned to keep depositing. Recognising the pattern early — and calling us immediately — makes recovery possible.

Outcome

The stolen funds were recovered. The criminal complaint is proceeding. The fraudsters have been identified through digital forensics and are subject to ongoing investigation.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to recover money from an online scam like this?

It depends on the payment method, the amount involved, and — above all — how quickly you act. In many cases recovery is possible. The initial case review is free.

Is the firm available at night and on public holidays?

Yes — we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including evenings, nights, and public holidays.

I paid in cryptocurrency — does that change things?

Recovery is more complex but not ruled out: on-chain tracing and cooperation with exchanges have produced results. Speed is still crucial.
