Online Fraud & Fund Recovery · 2024-11-20
Our client was drawn into a scam presented as a remote work opportunity promising guaranteed earnings. In reality, the 'job' required her to deposit ever-increasing sums into a cryptocurrency wallet controlled by fraudsters. Over €13,000 was deposited before our intervention stopped the scheme and recovered the funds.
The client was contacted via Telegram by individuals advertising a simple remote job that required only a few hours per day and promised consistent daily income. As the 'work' progressed, she was instructed to make increasing deposits into cryptocurrency wallets to 'unlock' higher-level tasks. Each deposit was presented as necessary to access the next earning tier. By the time she sought legal advice, over €13,000 had been transferred to wallets belonging to the fraudsters.
We commissioned an on-chain forensic analysis that traced the assets through several wallet hops to accounts held at regulated cryptocurrency exchanges. We filed a criminal complaint and provided the exchanges with formal legal notices, supported by the judicial authority's precautionary freeze order. The exchanges complied and the assets were frozen at those points in the chain.
Fake job scams — known as 'task scams' — are among the fastest-growing forms of online fraud. They target women and younger professionals, promising flexible income. The mechanism is always the same: small earnings initially, then escalating demands for deposits.
The frozen cryptocurrency was unlocked and returned to our client. The criminal complaint led to the identification of individuals involved in the fraudulent network. Our client recovered the full amount deposited.
